Google Business Profile

To draw in more local visitors, nothing is more important than a Google Business Profile (GBP) listing that has been completed properly. And, with a growing number of searchers using mobile devices, your prospects are searching google first, then skimming your information and calling you directly, in some cases without ever visiting your website.

Getting some of these steps right can be a huge step in the proper direction to acquiring more clients. Here are some common mistakes with GBP listings and some suggestions on how to get it right.

1. Profile Information

Don’t:

Create fake locations. Google insists that you only create a listing for an address where you have a physical office with someone there during the specified business hours.

Use keywords in your business name. While it’s tempting to use a location or practice area in your GBP listing, if you get caught, you’ll have to start from square one.

Do:

Be accurate.  Confirm the information you entered for firm name, address, phone number, and address. It should match exactly what’s listed on your website.

Complete your listing in its entirety.  Google typically uses information from every part of a GBP listing to display the most accurate results.

2. Google Posts

Don’t:

Add a link to your home page. Doing so will make your visitor do additional work to find the information they need. Direct visitors to the page of your website that has the most relevant information about the post.

Overuse keywords. Make your post for the reader, not the search engines. The rewards for your business will be better when visitors read your post and act.

Do:

Keep visitors up to date. You need to include the most current information about your business including new services, or changes to your hours.

Use keywords correctly. This is a great place to add variants of keywords that consumers use to find your business.

3. Photos

Don’t:

Use stock photos. Each photo you include should give visitors get a feel for what it’s like to do business with you.

Postpone adding photos. If you don’t add photos of your business, Google will use street maps view as a default and you’ll lose an opportunity to increase the number of calls and clicks

Do:

Use quality photos. It’s fine to use your cell phone to take regular photos of your business – just pick the best ones.

Add photos regularly.  Represent your business with lots of photos from accomplishments, your team in action, and various completed projects.

4. Customer Reviews

Don’t:

Get defensive. Responding negatively to an unhappy customer can negatively affect your business more than the review itself.

Post fake reviews – Fake reviews are so easy to spot and make your business look desperate, and if caught, consequences can be severe.

Do:

Respond promptly to reviews. If someone takes time to recognize your business, show them you care to encourage referrals and repeat business.

Proactively seek reviews. Getting a lot of great reviews is not difficult – you just have to ask!
