It may be hard to believe, but Facebook, the social media juggernaut boasting 2.27 billion active members around the globe, has just turned 15.
Its inception is now part of social media lore: Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook and its current chairman and CEO, devised a FaceMash website as an undergrad in Harvard. FaceMash, which compared student photos side by side, almost got him expelled with charges of breach of security, among others.
What happened next? Here are a dozen of Facebook’s most remarkable milestones:
- After FaceMash, Zuckerberg wrote code to develop an online student directory called “TheFacebook.” He and another student invested $1,000 each and launched Facebook on February 4, 2004.
- More than half the undergrads at Harvard joined within a month of the launch.
- Facebook introduces its photo feature with unlimited storage in 2005.
- After rolling out membership to colleges and high schools in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, the UK and Ireland, anyone age 13 and above with a valid email address was able to join in 2006.
- Business owners began to see the benefit of telling users about themselves and attracting potential customers via Facebook company pages.
- Facebook introduces mobile support in 2007.
- In 2008, Facebook adds a payment service with Facebook Credits.
- Facebook rolls out the ever-popular “Like” feature for users’ comments in 2010.
- The messaging service was revamped in 2010 as Facebook Messenger.
- In 2012, Zuckerberg takes the company public – at $38 per share, the IPO values the company at $104 billion.
- Facebook reaches the amazing milestone of 1 billion active users in a single day in 2015.
- Facebook Live streaming service for iPhone users added in 2016.
