OUR LATEST STORIES & NEWS

social media

Social media is always evolving, and different generations are engaging with it in different manners.

Facebook has changed from a digital stomping ground for hip, young people to a place where parents are commenting on old photos from the past.

Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter are permeating more of our lives, especially for younger people. As social media evolves, each generation engages and interacts with it in different ways.

Social Media Age Breakdown

Age 18 – 29: Social media is most prominent in this age bracket with first place for highest usage rate on 4 of the 5 main social media platforms. Usage is increasing for this group, but Instagram is experiencing the most growth by far. Facebook is most extensively used, but not growing by much right now, and Pinterest and Twitter growth are somewhere in the middle. LinkedIn’s popularity has grown at a notable rate, which suggests that business networking is also becoming more important to this group.

Age 30 – 49: This age group also uses social media extensively, coming in second behind in all platforms except LinkedIn. This group is losing interest in Facebook, as they become more engaged with other platforms, most notably LinkedIn, where they go for business networking.

Age 50 – 64: This age group is slowly coming around to technology and social media, on some platforms more rapidly than others. This might explain why your grandparents might be “liking” your photos. This group also holds their own on LinkedIn, indicating that they are interested in business networking and they’re also ranking on Pinterest.

Age 65 and older: Similar to the other groups, those 65 and older are active most frequently on Facebook. What’s different is that they had the largest increase in Facebook and while the younger groups have slowed down on this platform. When it comes to Twitter, just 10% of this group is engaging, but that number has grown. Instagram is up and Pinterest has similarly had a notable lift. LinkedIn showed substantial growth in this group’s usage indicating that they are also interested in making business connections.

The bottom line is that Facebook still boasts the most users, but is trending toward the mature crowd, while Instagram has enjoyed notable growth by all age groups. In addition, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Twitter are growing modestly across all groups. Following this pattern, we can expect ‘Generation Z’ to live lives that are even more saturated by social media.
