Golf Pro Turns Social Media Criticism Around to Benefit Charity

Max Homa did not have his best outing at the recent WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis. The California golf pro-shot poorly in the first two rounds, and fantasy golf participants who counted on him to boost their numbers turned to Twitter to let him know how unhappy they were.

When the tweets started to get nasty, one user came up with a brilliant suggestion to create an opportunity for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. This enterprising user volunteered to make a contribution to a charity for every birdie – a score of one-under-par on a golf hole – that Homa made in the next round.

Homa chose St. Jude for the charity and the Twitter pledges took off. Although the golfer finished well behind in the pack, his four birdies became the basis for substantial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Run Your Own Charity Challenge on Social Media

Do you have a favorite charity? Challenge your social media friends and followers to join you in supporting your worthy enterprise. Here are a few ideas:

  • Create your campaign with a catchy title and hashtag.
  • Build a campaign calendar with start and end dates and plan your social media content.
  • Choose your social media platform – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
  • Design your campaign. You don’t have to collect money. A podiatrist can sponsor a new or gently-used shoe drive for the needy.
  • Tell a story to show how donations can make a difference. Use videos and photos to show your nonprofit in action.
  • Set fundraising goals and benchmarks and report on them regularly. Use a graphic like a pie chart or a thermometer for an interesting visual.

It was a big win for Homa – on Twitter anyway! – once again demonstrating the power of social media. Whether raising money for your favorite charity or promoting your practice, social media marketing is the way to go!
