Optimize Your Network and Computer for Working from Home

If there are suddenly more people using the internet in your house, you may find that your web pages are taking longer to load. Luckily there are some things you can do to improve your computer’s performance.

7 Tips for Optimizing:

  1. Run regular adware and malware scans. Most antivirus programs are not great at identifying spyware and adware. These potentially dangerous programs can greatly diminish the speed of your connection. Removing them can be challenging, but there are a variety of programs that are specifically designed to target and remove these invasive programs.
  2. Perform virus scans at least once weekly.Viruses can reduce your connection speed while putting your identity and information at risk. Ensuring your computer is virus-free will go a long way toward increasing the speed of your connection.
  3. Change the browsers you typically use.If your old browser has difficult-to-remove toolbars and everything seems to be running slowly, you may want to consider switching to a different browser that may run faster.
  4. Remove any extra toolbars. When you install numerous toolbars for your browser, they can slow down your connection considerably. Removing some of them can help accelerate your browser and protect your private information.
  5. Clean your hard drive.A hard disk that is poorly optimized can pull down your computer’s speed and affect everything you do. Getting and keeping your hard drive optimized only takes a few minutes and can substantially improve your browsing session. Try to keep at least 15% of your hard drive free.
  6. Monitor your cache.Web browsers always store data from all the websites you visit so it will be easier to access them in the future. If the cache on your computer gets too large, it can harm your computer’s performance.
  7. Upgrade your router firmware.Check the router manufacturer’s website for current firmware downloads for your router. Then compare this with the version you’re using, and upgrade if needed. Most routers will check for firmware updates automatically when you open their configuration pages.

These are just some of the ways to help speed up your computer while everyone is trying to get online at the same time.
