In “From Instagram to TikTok: How social media evolved this decade,” CNN Business highlights the dramatic social media changes in the last decade and also ventures to make some predictions for the next ten years.

Instagram Changed How Young People Communicate

When Instagram went live on October 6, 2010, it gained more than 100,000 users in less than a week and had 1 million by December. Currently part of Facebook and boasting more than 1 billion users, Instagram has been quick to adapt to shifting user habits. Its focus now is experimenting with 15-second music videos and an option to share privately instead of publicly.

Other networks came into play like Snapchat in 2011. Although Snapchat failed to conquer a mainstream audience, its fleeting content has changed how young people communicate. Facebook is still the giant with 2.45 billion monthly active users worldwide. Twitter’s audience has stalled at 300 million monthly users.

Social media companies are not without controversy with charges of spreading misinformation, unprotected user privacy, on-line bullying, addiction and enabling election meddling.

TikTok is on the Rise

TikTok is a video-sharing social network where users can create short lip-sync, comedy and talent videos. Launched in 2016, the app has now been downloaded almost 1.6 billion times globally. Unlike Facebook and other social media networks, TikTok is entertainment-based and not all about personal connections.

The success of TikTok has prompted others like Facebook and Instagram to release copycat apps.

What’s in Store for Social Media in the Next Decade?

The CNN.com article opines that the major social media changes last decade were driven by new technology like augmented reality, faster connectivity and better smartphone cameras.

In the next ten years, 5G technology will push social media further with more interactive content. Technology will allow people to interact more closely with others and even feel that they are in the same room.
