Top Twitter Changes for 2021

Twitter has made many modifications over the years, but two major changes standout in 2021 – the process to get a blue checkmark is making a revival this year and absolutely no one is above permanent Twitter suspension anymore.

Changes You Need to Know

  1. Communities: Because they’ve worked so well for Facebook, Twitter is adding groups to its platform, but they’ll be referred to as “communities.” Users will now be able to start and join communities built around common interests. The examples Twitter provided are plants and cats, so users in a plant community would see even more content about plants. Those users who run the communities would be permitted to put their own rules in place for members, beyond those established by Twitter.
  2. Super Follows: Another redesign is called Super Follows, which permits users to direct their followers to certain content and charge them for the opportunity. The content could include newsletters, support badges, access to one of the new communities, and additional tweets. In Twitter’s sample, the users charge $4.99 per month for the additional benefits, and it allows them to collect that fee directly from their followers. The change is being made with the idea that it will help the company reach its 2023 goals for revenue and number of users. Super Follows is scheduled to launch before the end of the year.
  3. Verification Program Relaunch: The Twitter verification program might also be relaunching. For those of you who have been waiting a long time — like, three years — to get that sought-after blue checkmark, 2021 might be your year. After taking feedback from the public, Twitter launched its new verification policy. Some of the changes include:
  • No longer needing a header image or profile bio to receive verification.
  • More strict rules around how the blue checkmark is removed.
  • The minimum follower count is on a per-region; no longer on a per-country basis.
  • There will be categories for verification, like scientists and academics, which will be expanded next year.
  • Beginning January 20, 2021, verification badges from incomplete or inactive accounts will be taken down.

Twitter explained that the new application process will be self-serve, utilizing both human and automated review processes to make sure that they are reviewing applications thoughtfully and in a timely manner.
